The Eric F. Avery House is built on a 140' by 66' lot in Mount Royal looking out on Cartier Park. Rule Wynn and Rule's design is of a one-and-a-half storey split level with a semi-attached garage. The front of the house is at grade level, and the rear level a half-floor up. This format is similar to that of the Western Woods Trend House.
THE CLIENT
Eric Frank Avery (1903–1990) was born in Winnipeg and moved to Calgary in the early 1920s. He was the owner and president of Watson Construction Company. Avery was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club as well as the Ranchmen's Club.
On 2 August 1930 Avery married Myrtle Lorraine Gilmer (19??–1978) at Knox United Church. They had one son, William. Avery died on 7 December 1990 at age 87.
