ROYAL BANK BUILDING (second)
Firm: Dan Kiley and Associates, Jack Smith (partner in charge)
Address: 335 8 Avenue SW
Date of final plans: 1967
Status: standing as built
The 24-storey Royal Bank Building replaced the bank's previous Calgary headquarters, which had opened a block away in 1955 (see here).
The Royal Bank Building is part of a trio of buildings planned by Maxwell Cummings and Sons (of Montreal) and designed by Dan Kiley and Associates (of Charlotte, Vermont), all from 1967. The other two members of this trio are Pacific 66 Plaza and Calgary Place. All three were designed by Jack Smith, a partner at Kiley.
The building opened officially on Monday, 15 June 1970. For more information on the building, see my interview with Jack Smith here.
